G.R.E.A.T. IS

G.R.E.A.T., or “Gird Readiness and Early Achievement Team”, combines efforts of key community agencies to focus on preparing children, birth through five years, for entering kindergarten in the Richard Gird Elementary School attendance area.

The G.R.E.A.T. program is a collaborative consisting of the City of Chino, the Chino Valley Unified School District, Chino Valley YMCA, the County of San Bernardino, and FOY (Focus on Youth).

This grant will provide programs and services for children and their parents including:

  • School Readiness Center providing information, awareness, and knowledge on child development, school readiness and community resources.
  • Parent and Child Library (Books, Videos, Tapes, CD’s and Computer Software)
  • Computer/Internet use for Children/Parents
  • Community Based Education Training
  • Health and Support Services
  • Dental education through San Bernardino County Public Health
  • English and Spanish School Readiness Workshops
  • Case Manager and Registered Nurse/School Nurse Specialist
  • State Preschool and After School Day Care Information
  • Family Child Care License Information
  • Fitness/Nutrition and enriched learning activities for both parents and children conducted by the YMCA

Where?

The G.R.E.A.T. Center is located in Room #24 at Richard Gird Elementary School, 4980 Riverside Drive in Chino, on the corner of Riverside Drive and Monte Vista Avenue. G.R.E.A.T. is open Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with extended hours as needed. The center has a bilingual staff and offers walk-in services.

Services Description

 

Case Manager

Helps families with parenting needs including social services, counseling, Healthy Families/Medi-Cal applications, home visits, and accessing school readiness services.


Registered Nurse/School Nurse Specialist

Conducts health related workshops throughout the year. Provides health screenings and immunizations for children, TB testing for parents, and connects children and pregnant women with health care resources. Refers to Nurse Practitioner for physical examinations.

Nutrition/Fitness Activities

Available for parents and their children. Activities will be conducted by the YMCA and will focus on positive activities such as art, exercise, fitness and dance classes.

School Readiness Educational Workshops

Various topics throughout the year for parents to become knowledgeable and gain the necessary tools to help their children with school readiness. Workshops to include: dental hygiene, nutrition, and knowledge of preschool and kindergarten standards, social skills, and child literacy. On The Road To Learning, a school readiness program, will be partnering with the G.R.E.A.T. program to provide a series of school readiness workshops. Please call for dates and times.
